Introduction to IG-SRT

Our practice is excited to announce the addition of our new IG-SRT device! As the area’s first and only providers with such technology, we can now offer patients a non-surgical option for the treatment of skin cancer and keloids.

What is IG-SRT?

IG-SRT stands for Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy. This leading-edge, non-invasive therapy allows destruction of cancerous cells without the painful cutting or scarring that is seen with surgical treatment.

Unlike traditional radiation that delivers massive amounts of energy deep into the body, IG-SRT involves precise delivery of targeted energy waves that are limited to the skin. In fact, the energies of IG-SRT are less than that of a routine chest x-ray! This means NO severe reactions and NO significant damage to underlying organs or surrounding tissue structures.

Which skin cancers or conditions can be treated with IG-SRT?

IG-SRT can be used for the treatment of basal and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin. These are referred to as non-melanoma skin cancers, and they make up the overwhelming majority of skin cancer cases overall.

Additionally, IG-SRT can be used for the treatment of keloids, which is a pathologic type of abnormal scarring.

How does IG-SRT compare with surgery for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer? What are my options for treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer?

For decades, surgery has been considered the gold standard in treatment of non-melanoma skin cancers. Such interventions include electrodessication and curettage (or “ED&C”), excision and suture (or “E&S”) and Mohs micrographic surgery. While each of these contain cure rates of 90-99%, these invasive procedures invariably lead to pain, discomfort, scarring, and risk of complication.

Alternatively, IG-SRT offers a new non-invasive modality with comparative cure rates of 95%. This means equal effectiveness without the surgical drawbacks. This can be especially important for cases involving cosmetically sensitive areas (such as the face) or patients with higher risk of complication such as infection (i.e. diabetics, immunosuppressive medications, etc.) or post-operative bleeding (i.e. taking daily aspirin, blood thinners, etc.). Furthermore, with IG-SRT patients are able to continue their regular daily activities, without the hassle of physical restrictions.

So this sounds expensive. Will insurance pay for IG-SRT or will I be stuck with the bill?

Yes – IG-SRT is an accepted treatment modality that is acknowledged and covered by most insurance providers. In fact, our office will work with your insurance directly to provide you an accurate financial estimate PRIOR to starting treatment or submitting charges on your behalf.
