Benzoyl Peroxide

An over-the-counter topical medication, benzoyl peroxide is most commonly used for the treatment of acne and similar skin conditions. It can be found in numerous products and formulas, including various soaps, lotions, gels, and liquids. Benzoyl peroxide can be thought of as a “friendlier cousin of bleach.” As such, it is extremely effective at both killing bacteria and “degreasing” or unclogging skin pores, hair follicles, etc.   

SIDE EFFECTS

• Skin dryness or irritation.
  • Tip: Use the lowest strength recommended by your dermatologist. Moisturize frequently and adhere to strict sun protection! Avoid using at same time as other topicals unless otherwise directed. Lastly, can try newer/more expensive “micronized” formulas.
• Bleaching of towels, wash cloths, and other fabrics.
  • Tip: Be sure to rinse completely after using! Always use old or white washcloths and towels.

WHERE TO BUY

• Available at essentially all grocery stores and pharmacies.
  • Tip: Usually found on acne or general skin care aisle!
• Find product with listing under active ingredient. Can be bodywash, facewash, or soap.
  • Tip: Brands often have “Oxy” in name such as PanOxyl or Oxy Wash. 

HOW TO USE

• Face: Use 2.5% formula as wash each morning. Apply gentle moisturizer immediately, preferably with SPF 30+. Do NOT use at nighttime if you are also using a retinoid such as tretinoin (ie RetinA), adapalene (iie Differin, EpiDuo), or tazarotene (ie Tazorac).
• Body: Use 10% formula as wash daily (morning or night). Let sit for 1-2 minutes before rinsing. Can apply gentle moisturizer immediately after.
